Man Mountain & Architecture
Footprints On Hills
Welcome to the world of Hill Architecture. I have always felt that the Government is the biggest client for the architect. I was a chance visit in the office of Ar Vijay Uppal, the Architect in Chief, in Shimla and visit to his office floored me. The projects undertaken by his office have a rare blend of traditional architecture taking full advantage of the modern technologies and materials. His approach to architecture was very clear: not to loose the style and essence of the architecture that should be or must be built on the hills. After sifting through a few projects I offered to bring out a comprehensive document of all the projects of the department under his guidance and care.
A marvelous blend of true architecture emanates out of Ar Uppal and his team’s architectural expressions and relating the project with the site. The projects are varied from university Campus, medical colleges, engineering colleges, office complexes, guest houses, hostels, temples and departmental residences besides others. I took it on me to expose to the world a department that has contributed much to the cause of bringing out worthy architecture. After having known the constraints due to difficult topography and hard climatic conditions of the state it was thought appropriate to honour the Architect-in-Chief Vijay Uppal on behalf of his dedicated team.
I am always on a look out to promote sustainable architecture and this seems to me an appropriate finding. I am proud to present, on behalf of my A3 Foundation, “man, Mountain and Architecture” in the form of a document and a coffee table book. My congratulations to Ar Vijay Uppal and his entire team who have delicately created this architecture for the hills and of course not to forget the future generations.
